The premise is simple - stay with the group and the path they follow, or suffer the consequences. A few manufacturers seem to have a hard time understanding this key lesson.

Take for example Mazda. Down to this day they continue to produce the "sounds-good-on-paper" yet infamous rotary engine. The "sounds-good-on-paper" part comes from its theoretical simplicity and efficiency. The infamous part comes from its atrocious reliability and longevity. Thankfully, the rotary engine is confined to only one model in the Mazda lineup (RX-8). Besides Mazda, the number of manufacturers producing rotary engines: 0. Either Mazda is refining a fundamentally flawed design that will continue to be ignored by all other manufacturers, or they were right and eventually others will follow. Hmm...

Next we have the "keep-the-faith-in-the-5-cylinder-engine" group. Fundamentally, odd-number of cylinders do not balance as well as even numbered ones, resulting in peculiar noise and vibrations. This has been noted in several reviews, like New Car Test Drive's review of the Volvo C70 or Edmunds review of the Chevrolet Colorado and more recently the Volkswagen Rabbit. Mix in the improved power and economy of the 4 and 6 cylinder engines, and you have a sandwich effect that leaves little room for the 5. Audi was the first to mass-produce them in the 1970's, but eventually phased them out. The same phase-out seems to be occurring now at Volvo. Honda, considered one of the top engine designers, gave it a shot with the Acura Vigor, but that effort lasted only 4 years. In fact, out of the top German and Japanese manufacturers (Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota, and Honda), the number of 5-cylinder vehicles produced: 0. The message is clear - don't waste time with 5 cylinders, a message Volkswagen could have taken more seriously as the latest manufacturer to give 5 cylinders a try. The Volkswagen Jetta, for example, generates virtually identical power and mileage numbers as the similarly weighted 4 cylinder Toyota Camry.

The shrinking crowd of "hybrids-may-not-be-the-future" has whittled down to one beleagured manufacturer - General Motors. Introduced to the mass market right before the turn of the millenium, hybrid powertrains initially were weak, expensive, and only coupled to small vehicles. But top manufacturers were not fooled - hybrids are the future. Capturing lost energy that can be used for engine power is a concept that will not go away, and the cost-to-efficiency ratio keeps getting better. It is no wonder German manufacturers scrambled, realizing that Toyota and Honda got them on this one. Even Formula 1 racing, which focuses on trickle-down technology, has embraced such a concept. General Motors chairman Bob Lutz, however, is one such person that still hasn't got it. As recently as the middle of last year, he said that "hybrids are technologically of doubtful benefit". Nissan leader Carlos Ghosn also expressed hybrid doubts, but reluctantly conceded that the technology was promising.

Lexus Puts the Brakes On Engine Upgrades For 2007

Lexus Puts the Brakes On Engine Upgrades For 2007
01/14/2007
By Woody W.

The 2007 Lexus lineup is officially complete, and those disappointed in the engine upgrades, or lack thereof, maybe left with difficult decisions in the buying process.

The older 290 hp 4.3L V8 engine was not upgraded on anything but the all-new LS, hanging the GS and SC models out to dry for another full model year against upgraded German competitors who are all pushing at least 350 hp from their 8 cylinder engines. To exasberate this power deficit, the GS received an upgraded 6 cylinder engine (GS350) that actually outputs more horsepower and accelerates at the same pace (0-60 and 1/4 mile) as its 8 cylinder counterpart, and gets better gas mileage. The dilemma, of course, is for the premium buyer who wants the GS430 which doesn't offer more performance, has exactly the same standard features and offers similar options (save the 18-inch Spider wheels), and has a whopping $8,000 premium over the GS350.

The eight cylinder carry-over blues didn't stop with cars. The LX and GX SUV's also retained their increasingly anemic powerplants, with horsepower in the 260 range that today would map close to the bottom of the 8 cylinder charts.

On the hybrid front, unlike the GS450h, the RX330h did not receive the 3.5L 6 cylinder engine, and has the dubious honor of having the oldest 6 cylinder powerplant in the Lexus lineup. The 3.3L 6 cylinder engine in the RX330h was originally introduced on the 2003 Toyota Highlander.

Who Owns Who?

Who Owns Who?
08/11/2006
By Woody W.

A question on Yahoo! Answers basically asked "Who Owns Who?" in regards to automobile manufacturers. I am assuming "owns" doesn't necessarily mean wholly owned, but rather, enough ownership to have a controlling interest. Here is what I could dig up on the largest manufacturers based on numerous press releases and other sources. High level internal grouping, if applicable, are shown in parentheses.

BMW, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Mini, Rolls-Royce

DaimlerChrysler, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Maybach (Mercedes), Mercedes-Benz (Mercedes), Smart (Mercedes), Dodge (Chrysler), Chrysler (Chrysler), Jeep (Chrysler), and commercial brands such as Mitsubishi Fuso, Freightliner, etc.

DaimlerChrysler, minor owned and side notes:
With the ouster of CEO Jürgen Schrempp, DaimlerChrysler sold all of its stake in Mitsubishi Motors, which at one point was a controlling 34%, and sold all its stake in Hyundai Motors (10.5%).

Fiat, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ferrari, Maserati

Ford, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Volvo (PAG), Jaguar (PAG), Land Rover (PAG), Aston Martin (PAG)

GM, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Oldsmobile (now defunct), Saturn, HUMMER, Saab, Holden, Opel, Vauxhall

GM, minor owned and side notes:
GM reduced or sold in its entirety their stake in Asian automakers last year and this year. Suzuki went from 17.3% to 3%, almost all of its 20.1% stake in Fuji Heavy (maker of Subaru), and all of its 8% stake in Isuzu. GM has a "collaboration" plant called NUMMI in California which it shares with Toyota, but there is no ownership/control of the two companies outside the scope of this plant.

Honda, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Acura

Renault, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Nissan (Nissan), Infiniti (Nissan), Dacia (Renault), Samsung (Renault)

Toyota, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Lexus, Daihatsu, Hino

Toyota, minor owned and side notes:
Toyota has a 8.7% stake in Fuji Heavy (maker of Subaru), 5% in Yamaha, and 5.9% in Isuzu.

Volkswagen, controlling and/or wholly-owned:
Audi (Audi), SEAT (Audi), Lamborghini (Audi), Skoda (VW), Bentley (VW), Bugatti (VW)

Volkswagen, minor owned and side notes:
Porsche, a long-term partner that shares everything from parts to board members, has a 20% stake in Volkswagen, while Volkswagen has a 13% stake in Porsche.

2007 Toyota Matrix

2007 Toyota Matrix
08/03/2006
By Woody W.

Toyota announced details of the final model year Corolla Matrix before it moves on to an all-new platform next year. A carryover from the previous year, the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) also remains unchanged, starting at $15,260 with a five-speed manual transmission to $17,570 with the four-speed automatic transmission. The more powerful XRS and all-wheel drive versions have been eliminated, although a new limited edition (2,500 units) M-Theory package will be available. The $1,500 M-Theory package includes unique Speedway Blue paint with matching rear spoiler, a large chrome exhaust tip, 17-inch Caldina wheels shod with 215/50R17 tires, four wheel disc brakes (formerly standard on the XRS), sport tuned suspension, sport strut tower brace, and M-Theory badges inside and out.

Essentially a 5-door wagon version of the Corolla, sales of the Matrix is impossible to gauge from press releases since Toyota reports both the Corolla and Matrix summed together. With the current generation Corolla and Matrix introduced in 2002 (model year 2003), sales have held surprisingly well over the past 5 years, up 17.5% this year despite competition from Toyota's own Yaris/Scion models and the all-new Honda Civic. Most if not all Corollas and Matrix's sold in the US are built at the NUMMI plant in California alongside its mechanical twin Pontiac Vibe. It is unknown at this time if Pontiac will match Toyota's move in eliminating the higher output and all-wheel drive versions of the Vibe.

2007 Nissan Versa - Versatile In a Large Way

2007 Nissan Versa - Versatile In a Large Way
07/10/2006
By Woody W.

As vehicles get larger with each iteration, the smallest tend to grow out of a segment that still has potential, paving the way for new models with new names. With Toyota, the Yaris/Scion xA/Scion xB (all sharing the same platform) slotted below the Corolla, and Honda's Fit replaced the Civic as its smallest mainstream model. Responding in kind, Nissan introduces the 2007 Versa, its new entry-level model positioned below the perennial Sentra (which itself gets an all-new makeover for 2007). Weary of the performance-oriented media who traditionally had little regard to gas mileage numbers, Nissan is the last of Japan’s “Big 3” to arrive on the US scene after Toyota’s successful launch of its small-car Scion brand. Scion proved that small cars with small engines can thrive in the US if executed properly, which prompted Honda to ship its well-established Fit and now the Versa, otherwise known as Tiida overseas.

The Versa will be offered in two flavors: the base 1.8S and the better equipped 1.8SL, both standard with a 1.8-liter 122 hp engine and 6-speed manual transmission. The 1.8S has an optional 4-speed automatic compared to the 1.8SL's continuous variable transmission (CVT). Although performance figures have not been released, expect the 4-speed automatic to accelerate faster than the CVT but the latter to get better mileage. Standard equipment on both models include AM/FM/CD audio system, 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks, an Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) and both front seat side-impact and side-curtain air bags. The 1.8SL comes standard with 15-inch wheels, in-dash 6 CD autochanger with MP3/WMA playback, auxiliary input jack, remote keyless entry, cruise control with steering wheel controls and soft-touch interior accents.

While options on the 1.8S are few, the 1.8SL in contrast is an explosion, offering high-class options such as a keyless push-start control to a Bluetooth hands-free phone system. Like the xA, the 1.8SL offers an optional subwoofer, but chooses Rockford Fosgate instead of Bazooka. Pricing for the 1.8S and 1.8SL start at $12,450 and $14,450, respectively, and a fully loaded 1.8SL can top $18,000. Initially offered as a 5-door hatchback, a sedan version will be available next year, giving Nissan another angle to attack the likes of the Toyota Yaris. The US Versa will be made in Mexico at Nissan’s Aguascalientes assembly plant.

Based on the upcoming Nissan Cube and Renault Megane (not available in the US) platform, the Versa's largest asset is literally its size. Its 102-inch wheelbase and 94.4 cubic feet of passenger space clearly out-sizes the Fit's 96.5 inch/90.1 cubic feet and the xA's 93.3 inch/86 cubic feet, its closest competitors price-wise. The low-end Dodge Caliber also overlaps the Versa's price spectrum, and is sized slightly larger with a 103.7-inch wheelbase and 95.2 cubic feet of passenger space. Nissan purposely chose the 1.8-liter 4 cylinder engine to again out-size its rivals, although overseas the standard engine is the 1.5-liter unit. The Versa generates 122 hp at 30 MPG city/34 MPG highway with the manual, 28/35 for the automatic, and 30/36 for the CVT transmission. The Fit and xA have smaller engines (both 1.5-liters) with lower output but better mileage: 109 hp and 33/38 MPG for the Fit and 103 hp and 31/38 for the xA. On a side note, encouraging to Sentra owners is the fact that the larger and more powerful 2.0-liter 135 hp Sentra engine gets virtually identical mileage numbers as the Versa.

It will be interesting to see how consumers respond to the Versa - it's not as refined as the xA or Fit, nor as appealing on the design front, but offers more room and engine for the money. In the minivan segment, the Quest failed to deliver this balance successfully, resulting in the most expensive mid-cycle revision in the company's history. In addition, Nissan is reeling from an embarrassing US production-cut announcement, the first among the Japanese "Big 3", and will undoubtedly watch closely to see how the Versa fares in this small but increasingly important segment.

To support this site, look for this article at Associated Content: http://www.associatedcontent.com/automotive

2007 Convertible War Opening Up

2007 Convertible War Opening Up
06/21/2006
By Woody W.

Ever thought about buying a convertible? The thought might not have crossed your mind, but you might be surprised to find that dedicated convertibles comprise 5% of BMW, more than 10% of Mercedes-Benz, and a whopping 18% of Porsche sales.

With the stakes high, you can imagine the unease at the Porsche camp last year as BMW upped the power to its mid-cycle revised Z4. Rebranded 3.0 and 3.0si (from 2.5 and 3.0), engine output grew to 215 and 255 hp, respectively, corresponding to its 3 series brethren. Of course, the larger threat to Porsche was the potent $51,000 M Roadster, which conveniently slices between the two Boxster models. The M Roadster delivers an M3-inspired 330 hp and accelerates 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds.

Outperformed and out-priced, Porsche responds this year with its own power increase to its Boxster line. Incorporating Porsche's version of variable valve timing called VarioCam Plus, the Boxster's output grows 5 hp to 245 hp, and displacement remains unchanged at 2.7L. But the larger upgrade is the M-challenged Boxster S, with engine displacement growing from 3.2 to 3.4 liters and power increasing from 280 to 295 hp. That's good for 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 169 mph. Pricing for the Boxster and Boxster S grows modestly to $45,600 and $55,500 respectively.

Mercedes-Benz holds its footing as the SLK enters its third year. Available in 3.0L, 3.5L, and an AMG 5.5L, it is unlikely there will be any power upgrades for 2007, as indicated by the E-Class press release. The SLK55 AMG competes effectively with the Boxster S and M Roadster, generating 355 hp and sprinting 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. However, due in part to its standard retractable hard-top, the SLK55 is priced significantly higher at $62,275. An even more powerful Special Edition version generates 400 hp and goes 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, but is currently not available in the US.

More down market, Volkswagen offers the first retractable hard-top convertible priced below $28,000 for 2007. Based on the Golf platform, the Eos enters the market as a 2-door 2+2 convertible and available with a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder generating 200 hp or a 3.2L 6-cylinder generating 250 hp. Standard equipment includes Electronic Stability Control, 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, fog lights, panoramic sunroof, power windows, and cruise control. Upscale options include the double-clutch 6-speed automatic transmission (DSG), automatic and bi-xenon headlights, dual-zone climate control, ten-channel 600-watt Dynaudio sound system, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Eos was suppose to launch around summer but was delayed due to quality issues related to the retractable hard-top. Made by German-based supplier Webasto, who also makes the retractable roof on the Volvo C70, prototypes exhibited noise levels that were unacceptable to Volkswagen standards. Compared to the C70, the Eos' roof is faster and more complex, having five folding panels instead of three and incorporating the world's first built-in sunroof. Company officials say that it has "fixed the glitch, along with a problem in the production process."

With the introduction of the Eos, Mazda's Miata is now forced to offer a retractable hard-top. Although its starting price is significantly lower than the Eos at $21,000, the upscale Grand Touring model with automatic transmission starts above $26,000. With less than $2,000 separating the two, a retractable hard-top, with more security and reduced interior noise, would give the Eos a significant advantage over its soft-top rival. The additional cost of the hard-top roof will almost certainly position the high-end Miata directly against the low-end Eos. A retractable hard-top option can also aid Mazda in battling the GM convertibles, with both the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky available only with a soft-top. At this point, it is unclear if the retractable hard-top will be available throughout the Miata lineup or whether it will be standard or optional.

Beating Volkswagen to the market, Volvo launched its all-new Pininfarina-inspired C70 in April, selling an encouraging 435 units in its first month. Sporting a retractable hard-top roof and its usual safety marketing mantra, including a door-mounted inflatable curtain, Volvo hopes it can move its $39,000 convertible to the tune of 16,000 units globally. Safety aside, the C70's Achilles heel is undeniably the turbocharged 5-cylinder engine. Generating only 218 hp, the unconventional odd number of cylinders doesn't fundamentally balance out as well as even numbered ones. Honda tried unsuccessfully a 5-cylinder engine with the Acura Vigor, while most other manufacturers avoided them. Like the Miata, the C70 will face stiff competition from the high-end 6-cylinder Eos. With more engine power and a more sophisticated transmission and roof, the Eos is also priced almost $2,000 lower.

To support this site, look for this article at Associated Content: http://www.associatedcontent.com/automotive

Lexus Forecast: More Power For 2007

Lexus Forecast: More Power For 2007
06/20/2006
By Woody W.

If you took a quick guess as to which car is faster, what would you say - the $44,000 Lexus GS300, or the $34,000 ES350? If you guessed the GS, you would be wrong. The ES is more powerful and quicker in acceleration, an awkward fact that can make Lexus dealers nervous, especially with the GS' more sporty character. This situation is due to the unusually early introduction of the 2007 ES model, which was well ahead of the GS and giving us a glimpse of the power upgrades in store.

Starting with the GS, expect the base 3.0L 6-cylinder engine to be replaced with 3.5L unit that's already in the ES350 and GS450h, bumping horsepower from 245 to 272. Expect the 4.3L 8-cylinder engine to be replaced by the 4.6L unit, upgrading horsepower from 300 to 380. This should effectively move the sedan from 0-60 mph in the low 5 seconds, more closely matching its German rivals. It will be interesting to see if Lexus will offer another hybrid in the GS line. So far, Toyota and Lexus have resisted offering multiple hybrid powertrains for the same model, but a GS550h using the 4.6L 8-cylinder can slot nicely between the 6-cylinder GS450h and the flagship LS600h. The GS300 will be renamed to GS350, and GS430 to GS460.

As previously noted, the 272 hp 2007 ES350 has already been introduced, replacing the 225 hp ES330. This is essentially the same 3.5 liter unit being proliferated throughout Toyota's lineup, but due to octane optimization, generates slightly more power than its Toyota counterparts. A hybrid version, if offered, would be called ES450h with virtually identical specs as the current GS450h, generating 340 total-system hp. It could also signal a similar powertrain offering for Toyota's Camry, which shares the same platform as the ES, and is currently offered only in 4-cylinder hybrid form.

The 2007 RX350, also introduced ahead of schedule, replaces the RX330. Similar to the ES, horsepower moves from 225 to 270. Expect a similar change on the 3.3L RX400h, which goes from 268 total system hp to 340 and renamed to RX450h.

The SC430 and LS430 will follow the same upgrade as the GS430, but to establish its flagship status, the LS hybrid version will get an exclusive 5.0L 8-cylinder unit that will generate at least 410 hp. The LS430 will be renamed LS460 and the 5.0L hybrid LS600h. The LS will have the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission, and it is unclear if and when this will be shared with other models.

It is doubtful the IS, introduced last year, will have any powertrain upgrades for 2007. As for the GX and LX trucks, they are certainly due for an upgrade, but truck engines typically lag in advanced technology than its passenger-car counterparts. For example, Toyota's variable valve timing wasn't introduced on 8-cylinder trucks until model year 2005, although it was available on its passenger cars seven years earlier.

To support this site, look for this article at Associated Content: http://www.associatedcontent.com/automotive

2007 Mercedes E-Class: The Star Of Mercedes' Star

2007 Mercedes E-Class: The Star of Mercedes' Star
06/06/2006
By Woody W.

This article is now available at Associated Content: Article Link

2007 Toyota Solara

2007 Toyota solara
06/05/2006
By Woody W.

Toyota announced details of the mid-cycle revised Solara. Featuring exterior, interior, and convenience enhancements, the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) rises on average $382 or 1.5 percent. With this price increase, you get LED tail-lights, revised bumpers and rear spoiler, HID head-lights for the sport edition, optitron instrumentation, and an MP3 capable sound system with auxilary audio jack. SLE models include hands-free Bluetooth technology. Safety enhancements comprise of standard seat-mounted side airbags and a direct tire pressure monitoring system for all trim levels.

The powertrain remains virtually unchanged - a 155 hp 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine standard, and an optional 210 hp 3.3 liter V6. The Solara remains a half-cycle behind its Camry counterpart, and therefore retains the older chassis and powertrain. All Solara models are built in Georgetown, Kentucky. It is unclear whether they will also be built in the newly acquired Subaru manufacturing plant in Indiana.

Does It Matter Which Gas You Use? Rev. 2

Does It Matter Which Gas You Use? Rev. 2
05/25/2006
By Woody W.

The choices are many: Chevron, Mobil, 76 Unocal, Texaco, Arco, etc. And with each brand you seem to be getting a unique product, like Chevron’s Techron or Shell’s V-Power. So naturally, one would ask, does it matter which gas you use?

Apparently it does. Starting last year, the top four manufacturers established their own standard of gasoline called Top Tier. Unsatisfied, among many things, with the minimal detergent levels in gasoline required by the government, BMW, Toyota, Honda, and GM specified what they think is a satisfactory standard in controlling deposits and increasing engine longevity. Details of this standard can be found at http://www.toptiergas.com.

According to toptiergas.com, "many gasoline retailers provide fuels with lower-quality additive packages that can build up deposits on fuel injectors and on intake valves. Others can build up deposits in combustion chambers and may lead to intake valve sticking. These lower levels of additives can have negative impacts on engine performance and vehicle responsiveness."

Pete Misangyi, Fuels and Lubricants Engineering Supervisor for Ford Motor Company, also emphasizes the fuel factor when it comes to engine deposits. He says that "if customers need an additive due to engine deposits, or bring the vehicle in for service due to a performance deficiency, they should probably switch the brand of gasoline they’re using." Engine deposits have spawned the proliferation of products dedicated to cleaning engine parts, like fuel injectors or valves. But most manufacturers don't recommend any oil or fuel additives.

Left out of the Top Tier alliance, Ford has taken the unprecedented step of recommending a specific gasoline brand. Starting with 2006 models, Ford vehicles have "Ford Recommends BP" printed on its gas cap, which apparently includes BP's Amoco brand. It is not clear if this endorsement includes the SOHIO and Arco brands, also acquired by BP. In its press release related to Ford's endorsement, BP stated that it "backs up the quality of all its fuels with a written guarantee, and is the only major integrated oil company to do so." None of the BP brands are listed as Top Tier.

Top Tier is a voluntary standard and not every brand meets its requirements. As of today, the following brands are qualified to be rated Top Tier (regardless of octane rating):

* QuikTrip
* Chevron
* Conoco
* Phillips
* 76
* Shell
* Entec Stations
* MFA Oil Company
* Kwik Trip/Kwik Star
* The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
* Chevron-Canada
* Aloha Petroleum
* Tri-Par Oil Company
* Shell-Canada

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://automobilenews.blogspot.com/2006/05/does-it-matter-which-gas-you-use-rev-2.html' title='Does It Matter Which Gas You Use? Will Toyota join the ethanol bandwagon?

Apparently so. One source was quoted as saying that we will see flex-fuel Toyota vehicles in the US by 2008. Another source, however, was more tentative, saying that only the Brazilian market would get flex-fuel initially, and that other markets are uncertain. To make a vehicle E85 compliant, different materials are used in the fuel management and delivery systems to prevent the corrosive effects of ethanol. But with Toyota's standard of long-term reliability, this is a concern that still has their engineers cautious.

Toyota's ethanol reluctance could also be attributed to the controversial environmental benefits, as noted by another manufacturer. Ethanol burns only "slightly cleaner" (emissions) compared to gasoline, according to BMW and contrary to many pro-ethanol sources. BMW also states that E85 burns with 27% less energy, which means a driver will use more E85 to cover the same distance as gasoline. In addition, ethanol production to the volume and efficiency required as a true alternative is questionable.

Farewell, 2006

Farewell, 2006
05/22/2006
By Woody W.

There have been three discontinuation accouncements so far so we like to say farewell and look at the reasons why.

The Hummer H1 was based on the military HMMWV, or Humvee, and was introduced to the civilian population in 1992. Besides the armor and weaponry, the H1 was a true military vehicle in every way - its rugged looks was backed up by heavy sheetmetal and worthy off-road capabilities. But flipping the other side of the coin, a raucous, spartan, and small interior, mixed with high cost without the benefits of economies-of-scale, and you can easily see why the $130,000 truck was a hard pill to swallow, sales-wise. Its horrendous gas mileage in an increasingly hostile public relations environment sealed its fate. In 2005, GM sold only 374 H1's.

The Acura RSX was a surprise to some but not to others. It was a surprise in the sense that the RSX, formerly called Integra, has been the entry model of Acura every since the brand's beginning in 1986. It also survived the market overlap issue with Honda's Prelude. But for many, the RSX didn't represent luxury, starting at $20,000 and based on the $15,000 Honda Civic platform. In contrast, most luxury brands start closer to $30,000. Acura's closest competitor, Lexus, has its entry model (IS250) based on the $44,000 GS platform. The RSX' retirement moves the TSX into the entry level slot, and a TSX coupe starting in the high 20's is rumored to be in the pipeline.

The Honda Insight was the first mass-produced hybrid on the US market and boasted an industry-best 66 MPG. As such, Honda misleadingly calls it the "original hybrid." Toyota's Prius was actually introduced before the Insight in the Japanese market. And the hybrid system was so weak and under-developed that practicality was minimal. To achieve its mileage gains, it used an unconventional 3 cylinder engine that generated only 53 hp. The hybrid system itself generated only 14 horsepower, for a total output of 67 hp, severely below the industry average. Weighing less than 2000 lbs and only available as a 2-door with manual transmission (now available with CVT), it's easy to see the Insight achieving industry-best mileage without the hybrid system. The Honda Insight was never a volume model, and typically sold less than 100 units per month. It was nothing more than a PR tool.

Lexus LS 600h: Poor Man's V12

Lexus LS 600h: Poor Man's V12
05/19/2006
By Woody W.

When Lexus' all-new flagship sedan arrives this fall, it will have the most powerful engine ever made by Toyota. How much power? Lexus wouldn't give specifics, but they said to expect more than 430 hp, at least an astonishing 55% increase than the current flagship.

The vehicle is the 2007 LS 600h. And the engine is an all-new 5.0 liter 8 cylinder. But they don't want you to know that. A model's numerical name usually denotes the engine's displacement, or size. But for marketing reasons, this isn't always true. For example, the BMW 325i's engine size is really 3.0 liters, as is the BMW 330i. At one time, the 325i's engine was 2.5 liters, but when it grew to 3.0 liters, the marketers wanted to keep the model name 325i to denote a weaker engine than its 330i counterpart. So what's the motivation in branding the LS 600h intead of LS 500h?

No doubt to target the Mercedes-Benz SL600 and BMW 760 sedans, both true 6.0 liters and graced with elite 12 cylinder engines. Which is a problem for Toyota, since they don't have any 12 cylinder engines. What to do? Enter the hybrid. By combining Toyota's most powerful engine to the hybrid system, the LS 600h can "provide power and performance on par with modern 12-cylinder engines while still delivering best-in-V8-class fuel efficiency."

Though the fuel efficiency benefits of the hybrid system is questionable on a vehicle that will undoubtedly exceed 4000 lbs, the power gains are not so questionable. The 5.0 liter 8 cylinder engine will provide at least 410 hp (the LS 460's 4.6 liter engine has 380 hp), and the hybrid system at least another 60 hp, for a conservative estimate of 470 hp. That thoroughly trounces the BMW 760's 438 hp, but the Mercedes-Benz SL600 escapes by using twin turbos to generate 510 hp.

To be fair, a hybrid's power is not constant, turning off to conserve gas or unable to provide full power when charging. But marketing-wise, for the $75,000 (est) LS 600h to even suggest parity to BMW's $110,000 or Mercedes' $140,000 elite sedans, is an undeniable victory that has the Germans scrambling to add more compression, turbos, and hybrid systems of their own.

Enemy Of My Enemy

Enemy Of My Enemy
05/17/2006
By Woody W.

Originally perceived as a niche market with limited potential, the Germans largely ignored hybrids and focused primarily on diesels, and US makers were looking at ethanol, among other things. In North America, however, both diesel and ethanol application are limited, and vehicles getting more than 40 MPG were uncommon. When the first hybrids hit our shores, the hype was on, automakers scrambled, and an amusing odd-couple alliance formed (really a three-some).

Ford was the first to license the hybrid powertrain from Toyota, applying it to the Escape SUV. Nissan, a reluctant hybrid adopter, also capitulated and licensed from Toyota (the Altima Hybrid is yet to be released). Volkswagen decided to strengthen its alliance with Audi and Porsche, with Audi taking the development lead. They then wisely formed an alliance with hybrid battery supplier Sanyo, noting the supply issue Ford had with hybrid batteries.

This leaves Daimler-Chrysler, BMW, and GM out of the hybrid picture. It is therefore logical although amusing to see these manufacturers form a hybrid alliance. It is logical because the Japanese, particularly Toyota and Honda, and battery suppliers Matsushita and Sanyo, already have a significant headstart in hybrid technology. But also amusing, considering the long and well-documented fierce rivalry between Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The two have rarely collaborated with each other.

But why would engineering powerhouses Mercedes-Benz and BMW bring in GM? The answer could lie in the hybrid battery, a key component in high demand and hammerlocked to the Japanese mainland. Delphi, a GM-based supplier, has ties to lithion-ion specialists Enerdel and Japan-based Enerstruct. Enerdel plans to manufacture the next generation hybrid batteries in the US, providing auto companies a third choice other than Matsushita or Sanyo.

The resulting output of the alliance is a "state-of-the-art full hybrid system," intended to at least reach parity or optimistically leapfrog the Japanese. The full hybrid system utilizes an industry-first CVT (continuously variable transmission) and fixed-gear transmission in one, allowing the user to choose between 4 fixed gears or 2 CVT modes for a total of 6 gear choices. This allows better efficiency (up to 20%) compared to CVT-only hybrids, and more flexible applications to many types of platforms (front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, trucks, SUV's), according to the press release.

Expect hybrid BMW's, Mercedes-Benz, and others to be rolling into dealers as early as model year 2008.

Japanese Prefer Bratwurst

Japanese Prefer Bratwurst
05/15/2006
By Woody W.

We've known for some time that the most popular imported cars in the US are Japanese, but have you ever wondered what foreign brands the Japanese prefer?

The answer is decidedly German. This year has been consistent with Volkswagen as the number one imported brand choice in Japan, commanding a 23% of the import market, followed by Mercedes-Benz (20%), BMW (15%), and Audi (5.5%). Combine Volkswagen and Audi (owned by Volkswagen) and you get an almost 30% market share, a sizeable 10% gap to the nearest competitor.

A stark contrast to the US market, where BMW outsells Volkswagen and Audi combined. Even Mercedes-Benz outsells Volkswagen. This is significant considering both BMW and Mercedes-Benz do not sell their higher-volume, lower-priced models in the US. For example, both the Mercedes-Benz B-class and Smart models (owned by Mercedes-Benz) will each sell over 100,000 units annually but are not available in the US.

The import market in Japan represents roughly 250,000 units annually, but is only a small percentage of the more than 4 million cars sold in Japan. Japan is currently the second largest auto market in the world. The US is the world's largest, at 16-17 million cars sold annually.

What Is Quality?

What Is Quality?
05/11/2006
By Woody W.

What do you think of when it comes to a vehicle’s quality? When talking to others, no doubt you have realized that not only can standards differ, but also the definition. Quality really encompasses several definitions, which are

• Reliability
• Strength/Durability
• Refinement
• Sophistication

Depending on one’s background and circumstances, one definition can be more important than others. The following explains each definition and how it relates to our view of a vehicle’s quality.

RELIABILITY. Perhaps the most popular and important definition of quality, reliability is the ability to function in the context of time. Reliability is rarely associated with non-functional issues, like squeaks or rattles. In relation to cost and convenience, reliability gives particular attention to a vehicle’s powertrain (primarily the engine and transmission) and electrical system.

STRENGTH. Strength of a particular section or components of a vehicle, especially under load or stress. Examples of strength are bending strength and/or thickness of metal components, like the chassis (aka torsional rigidity), resistance to chips or cracks of the windows, and resistance to wear and tear on interior surfaces.

REFINEMENT. Usually termed NVH by the industry, unrefined Noise, Vibration, and Harshness focuses on not what something does, but how it does it. Common NVH issues are squeaks, rattles, transmission smoothness, etc. Refinement is rarely if ever measured in review publications, especially over time.

SOPHISTICATION. Sophistication is knowledge and understanding applied in a way that enhances the driving experience. Higher sophistication usually results in higher maintenance cost and lower reliability. For example, the cloth seats of a Chevy Aveo have only two adjustments, which in the long-term would probably be more reliable than the BMW 750i’s 16-way power front seats that have heating, cooling, and massage functions.

NOTE: Many publications quote JD Power & Associates and Consumer Reports to measure quality. By quoting these two sources, they define quality as what the consumer perceives is an issue with the vehicle. This is probably more accurate for functional issues than non-functional ones. For example, if the radio doesn't turn on, this is defined as an issue universally (functional). But if the window rattles when partially opened, depending on the owner, this may or may not be an issue (non-functional). Since JD Power & Associates and Consumer Reports do not distinguish functional versus non-functional complaints, they should be viewed as more customer-centric rather than vehicle-centric measures of quality.

What's the Best Car Wax?

What's the Best Car Wax?
05/08/2006
By Woody W.

With many choices of wax brands and users swearing by this product or that, how do you choose the best car wax? One way is to look at what the manufacturers use. Consumers and magazines usually test the shine or endurance of a wax. But they seldom if ever measure the affects on the paint surface, ironic since the primary purpose of wax is to protect the paint. To illustrate, pouring gasoline on your skin will make it shinier and adding chemicals can make it stay on longer, but that doesn't necessarily make it good for your skin.

Manufacturers however, have a deeper understanding of chemical compositions, and have more sophisticated testing to measure these variables and more. Its with this level of understanding that manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, and Honda have chosen Zymöl waxes for their vehicles. Adding to this impressive list of top manufacturers are Porsche Club of America, US Museum of Transportation, and Christie's Auction House, all who care for vehicles easily exceeding six digits. No other wax brand carries such strong endorsement.

Founded in 1980 by car enthusiast and businessman Charles E. Bennett, Zymöl has developed washing, cleaning and feeding products originally based on German formulas dating back to the 1800s. Leaning more to a natural compound rather than processed and harsh chemicals, Zymöl hand-crafted waxes have a carnauba content of 37 to 61 percent by volume – five to ten times the industry standard. They only use Brazilian No.1 yellow and the rarer No.1 white carnauba, the highest grade available. I am transitioning my blog from Yahoo 360, which is why you see the original post date on many of the posts here. This is something I do in my spare time, although I prefer to do it full-time if I had a choice. The purpose of this blog is not to forward or regurgitate auto news, but rather to reflect on and see things in context. Hopefully this increases value and accuracy. For example, many sites regurgitated Consumer Reports' article on best and worst mileage vehicles. Compare their article with my post "Big Three Misleading On Fuel Efficiency" (see the May 2006 archives, lower right section of this page).

You will find that traditional domestics are more behind on high-mileage vehicles than meets-the-eye. Ford's Escape Hybrid, for instance, has its hybrid powertrain licensed from Toyota, so who really gets the credit? Pontiac's Vibe has its powertrain from Toyota. And Mazda 6's engine is from Ford. But many articles failed to mention this, which in my opinion, compromises accuracy.

Not to say that my posts are always more correct either. There's a balancing between taking time to reflect and posting sooner than later. Both are important, and I hope I can strike a balance that will be insightful, relevant, and to some degree, entertaining. So again, welcome to this site, and thank you for your support.

* Woody W.

Does it matter which gas you use?

The choices are many: Chevron, Mobil, 76 Unocal, Texaco, Arco, etc. And with each brand you seem to be getting a unique product, like Chevron’s Techron or Shell’s V-Power. So naturally, one would ask, does it matter which gas you use?

Apparently it does. Starting last year, the top four manufacturers established their own standard of gasoline called Top Tier. Unsatisfied, among many things, with the minimal detergent levels in gasoline required by the government, BMW, Toyota, Honda, and GM specified what they think is a satisfactory standard in controlling deposits and increasing longevity for engines.

Top Tier is a voluntary standard and not every brand meets its requirements. As of today, the following brands are qualified to be rated Top Tier (regardless of which octane(grade) you use):

* QuikTrip
* Chevron
* Conoco
* Phillips
* 76
* Shell
* Entec Stations
* MFA Oil Company
* Kwik Trip/Kwik Star
* The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
* Chevron-Canada

Moonraker's Moonlike Price, orig. posted 05/01/2006

Volkswagen last month released details of it's new Passat Appearance Package that consists of front and rear skirts with color contrasting elements, a honeycomb-designed grille, side sill kit, a harmonically integrated tailgate lip, oval-shaped tail pipe trim and 18-inch titanium colored alloy wheels, wrapped with 235/45R18 high-performance summer Pirelli tires, and sportier lowering springs. The overall effect is impressive and functional too, improving downward force at higher speeds. Available as a complete package or in piece-meal, the launch date is scheduled for this fall.

The price, however, is not so impressive. The complete package is listed at $4,500, or 14%-20% of the Passat's starting price ($23,000-$32,000), representing a poor value from the factory. It is clear that Moonraker, the Volkswagen team responsible for the package, is not integrated into the manufacturing process, as the price indicates that the parts are additive. Ideally, performance or aero packages from the factory cost significantly less than aftermarket, since in addition to economies-of-scale, the cost of the original part is subtracted with the replacing performance part. For example, the Sport Package on a 2006 BMW 330i is only $1,600 and includes sportier lowering springs, 18-inch sport wheels wrapped in run-flat performance tires, sport steering wheel, and modified engine control.

March Of The Turbos, orig. posted 04/26/2006

Turbos have been around for a long time, but until recently have been rejected by mainstream manufacturers or volume models due primarily to long-term reliability concerns and turbo-lag. A turbo system is exposed to high temperatures and high-speed revolutions (the turbine typically spins at a rate many times the engine revolution). But fundamentally, turbos are efficient, using the exhaust gas to increase engine power like water flowing through a dam to generate electricity.

With manufacturing methods and design constantly improving, it was just a matter of time before turbo adoption would increase, and that time is now. Starting with the Germans, Mercedes-Benz has all but abandoned supercharging in favor of turbos, with the next generation AMG models only available with normal aspiration or turbocharging. BMW has already announced a turbocharged version of its mainstream 3 series, the 2007 335i, which produces 300 hp from 3.0 liters and 300 lb-ft of torque. In its press release, BMW stated that turbocharging can produce more power with less weight, signaling more turbo models to come. This is increasingly more important as engine displacement and consequently weight increases, putting more strain on the all-important weight distribution that can affect handling. Volkswagen had already announced its 2007 Golf and Touran models with "twincharging" and that more models would follow. Volkswagen's "twincharger" approach uses supercharging for lower rpms and turbocharging for higher rpms, a concept used in World War 2 planes.

The Japanese "Big 3" are more cautious, with only Honda announcing its 2007 Acura RDX compact SUV with turbocharging. However, with the horsepower war in full swing (see blog "Horsepower War Heating Up", 04/14/2006) and gas prices rising, expect Toyota and Nissan to introduce turbo models soon.

The domestic "Big 2" are in a more precarious position. Chrysler can adopt turbocharging know-how from Mercedes-Benz, and both Toyota and Nissan have experience with turbocharging. But GM and Ford have usually relied on larger displacement for more engine power, and will have to devote already constrained resources in developing an efficient and reliable turbocharging powertrain. However, Volvo uses turbocharging extensively and may be able to assist Ford in this area.

Ejector Seats Preferrable In Planes Only, orig. posted 04/19/2006

<imgsrc="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5763/2893/320/2006_Chevy_Uplander.jpg" border="0" alt="" />

Safety seems to be improving with each passing generation, since we now expect vehicles in crash tests to be rated "good" by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). In prior decades, ratings of "poor" or "marginal" were common, and many safety features like airbags mandated today were limited to the luxury class. Today, no less than six airbags seem to be standard in all vehicles, and the IIHS has turned to side and rear crash tests and seat design to augment an increasingly uneventful and predictable frontal crash test.

With this level of safety, it was surprising to see the 2006 Chevrolet Uplander (and related GM models) have its seats fall off in IIHS' crash tests. According to the IIHS, "all four attachment points for the seat occupied by the rear passenger dummy completely dislodged. The seat broke free." More specifically, the rear middle seat broke off in a side-impact crash, and sandwiched between the outer seats, damage to the crash dummy was minimal. But the implications are clearly disconcerting. "A real person in a more complicated real-world crash might not fare as well", stated Adrian Lund, President of the IIHS. GM engineers are working on a fix and no doubt a recall will be issued thereafter.

Honda Hybrid Hesitates, orig. posted 04/18/2006

<src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5763/2893/320/2007_HondaAccordHybrid.jpg" border="0" alt="" />

Sales of the Honda Accord Hybrid plummeted in March almost 70% compared to last year, posting only 581 sales. This is an unusually sharp decline compared to the rest of the hybrid landscape, with both the Toyota Prius and Civic posting a sales decline of 23%. But it's not just last month's sales. In general, sales of the Honda Accord Hybrid have been well below expectations, so much so that Executive Vice President Dick Colliver recently stated that "it's having a hard time in the market" and that they may cut production.

Considering a $30,000 starting price and a six-cylinder engine as the only choice, the Accord Hybrid is awkwardly positioned. Fuel-conscience consumers typically opt for four-cylinder engines. Price-conscience consumers will find $30,000 hard to swallow. And image-conscience consumers look at Acura more than Honda, especially at this price point. It will be interesting to see if Honda will offer the Accord Hybrid with a four-cylinder engine and lower price to find the volume they were originally expecting.

On that note, Toyota wisely will offer the Camry Hybrid at $25,000 with a four-cylinder engine. I predict sales of at least 30,000 annually, and with a limited market in view, perhaps eventually a Camry Hybrid six-cylinder with annual sales of 10,000-15,000.

Toyota's Hybrid Improving, orig. posted 04/17/2006

Although the Lexus GS450h's hybrid powertrain generates the same amount of power as the Toyota Prius, it is more efficient and has less parts, according to supplier Denso. More specifically, the DC-DC converter, battery-monitoring unit, and the system main relay have all been improved to reduce power-loss, size, and noise, respectively. This improved system can also be found on the upcoming Lexus LS600h, and most likely the upcoming Toyota Camry Hybrid.

It is unknown when these revisions will be implemented on the rest of Toyota's hybrids, like the Prius, Highlander, and Lexus RX450h.

Horsepower War Heating Up, orig. posted 04/14/2006

GM introduced their new 3.5 and 3.6 liter(L) six-cylinder engines with variable value timing rated at 250-267 horsepower(HP). This effectively matches Toyota's latest six-cylinder offering on the horsepower front, at 3.5L and around 269HP. In fuel efficiency, however, GM's mileage numbers will probably be lower (see blog "Big Three Misleading On Fuel Efficiency, 02/02/2006"). An early indicator: the 2007 Suzuki XL7 with GM's 3.6L and 250HP has an EPA mileage of 18/24 for the front-wheel drive model. Toyota RAV4's 3.5L generates more power (269HP) and gets almost 20% better mileage, 22/29, although overall dimensions are smaller (a more fair comparison would be Toyota's Highlander, which is one of the few models that have not adopted the new 3.5L unit).

With the two largest auto-makers matching their smaller peers, it will be interesting to see how Nissan and Honda respond. Both companies have leveraged their engine power advantage in positioning themselves as the sportier choice. Possibly adopting BMW and Mercedes' strategy in staggering powertrain launches, Nissan's all-new 2007 Altima and facelifted 2007 Maxima have opted to keep its current 3.5L six-cylinders unchanged, rated at 260-265HP. Honda's six-cylinders are rated at 244-258HP, but have lower displacement (3.0-3.2L) and were introduced earlier.

Best guess: The Altima and Maxima will eventually adopt the Z/Infiniti GX engine, a higher compression 3.5L that generates around 300 HP. A higher displacement six-cylinder on the Z/GX models, possibly 3.7-4.0L, must outmuscle current segment leader Lexus IS350 (3.5L, 303 HP), so expect at least 320-330HP. Honda's Accord/Acura TL models will eventually adopt the 3.5L 290HP engine currently in the RL. When this happens, an eight-cylinder option might be available on the RL to solidify its flagship status. Turbo compression or even larger displacements might be introduced as an "S-Type" option to push Acura's six-cylinder sports line past the Lexus IS350.

The most notable victims of the horsepower war are the Germans, with their latest six-cylinder offerings barely keeping up with the mainstream. Both BMW and Mercedes-Benz are adopting turbo compression again, so expect the next generation to at least match the mainstream move into the 300-400HP range. And/or expect compression ratios to rise, which BMW deftly demonstrated on the current M3 that has only 3.2L but 333HP. Smaller companies seem to be further polarizing into obscurity. No clearer can this be seen than on Mitsubishi's 2007 Outlander. Its all-new 3.0L six-cylinder engine generates only 220HP, almost 20% lower than Toyota's and most likely neglible if any mileage advantage.

TomTom and Garmin Find OEM Route, orig. posted 03/13/2006

Always wanted an aftermarket navigation system but didn't know which one to get? First, you have to decide whether you want an in-dash or portable system. In-dash systems integrate into the vehicle's dashboard and sound system, giving you more features, security, and generally a larger display screen. But they are also more costly to purchase and install, and the added security negates portability (for sharing among vehicles or hiking).

Portable systems are generally cheaper in every sense, with typically smaller screens, processing power, and features. But if it's a portable system you're interested in, the choice just got easier. TomTom's GO range of navigation systems was recently awarded the 2006 Frost and Sullivan Automotive Telematics and Infotainment Product of the Year Award. Dominating the European industry with over a 50% market share, TomTom's reputation was further bolstered with the annoucement that it was the first personal navigation device to be factory installed (OEM). Toyota chose the TomTom GO 500 product to be customized into its Aygo model, and Opel followed suite with its Corsa model (both Aygo and Corsa models are not available in the US). Although renowned for their intuitive interface, US customers have reported issues with map accuracy and directions, which hopefully are corrected with the new 510 and 910 models.

Not to be outdone on the OEM front is TomTom's rival Garmin, which secured an agreement with Smart, a DaimlerChrysler division. Based on the newly announced StreetPilot c500 series, OEM customization will be applied to Smart's fortwo and forfour models (Smart models are not available in the US).

These recent announcements make TomTom and Garmin the only portable navigation brands with automobile manufacturer endorsements.

UPDATE 04/06/2006: The Garmin Quest 2 is offered through US Toyota dealers as an accessory on the FJ Cruiser.

Flying High, orig. posted 03/03/2006

Curious about recent strong successes?

How about the 2007 Audi Q7, which is scheduled to arrive in the US this Summer but is already available in Europe. Originally predicting 2000 initial orders and a worldwide yearly total of 50,000 to 70,000 units, Audi was shocked to receive a whopping 11,000 orders. Trying to handle demand to the tune of more than five times the original estimate, Audi engineers are trying to optimize and re-organize manufacturing methods at its plant in Bratislava, Slovakia. Already on three shifts, the plant produces 300 Q7s a day, along with the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, which all share the same platform. Arguably a better executed design than both the Touareg and Cayenne, the Q7 could eventually cannibalize production from its peers, since they have the opposite dilemma - low demand and over a 30% decline in sales for 2005.

The 2006 Honda Civic's US demand is so strong that Honda is looking at Japanese and English plants to provide a short-term solution. In the long-term, Honda is looking at expanding its Alabama plant or adding a new plant somewhere in North America to meet its increasing market share. Civic sales this year are up almost 50% and are on track to potentially exceed 250,000 units for the year.

Honda's archrival Toyota and its Corolla model is holding up well despite the Civic onslaught. Sales are down only slightly for the aging Corolla, and it will be interesting to see how the all-new Corolla will fair later this year. The 2007 Toyota Camry also seems to be an early home-run hit. Historically not a popular model in Japan, Toyota predicted only 1000 initial orders but received over four times that amount. Unlike Audi, Toyota should have little problem adjusting production to meet demand.

The highly competitive entry level luxury segment is seeing BMW dominate with its 2006 3 series, with US sales so far up more than 25% and selling over 9,000 units for the month of February. Lexus' all-new IS is selling at a rate less than half that amount, and Audi's A4 is almost half of the IS. The Mercedes-Benz C-class, once the prime 3 series contender, is fading quickly out of contention, trailing even the IS in sales and so far this year down over 25%.

Super Camry In Flight, orig. posted 03/01/2006

Is the 2007 Toyota Camry with 268 hp still too bland for your tastes? Not to worry - Toyota unveiled the Aurion concept at the 2006 Melbourne Motor Show. Based on the Camry platform, the exterior showcases a more sportier stance and aggressive lower body work, compliments of lead designer Nick Hogios. And it's not just cosmetics - Toyota has confirmed a supercharged version for the 3.5 liter V6 engine that will be factory installed. This will be the first six cylinder with variable valve timing that will be supercharged by Toyota. If the previous generation supercharger is any indication, expect output to top 340 hp.

The Aurion concept is a close representation of what the production vehicle will look like, and with Toyota's shortened development cycle, the launch date could be as early as the fall of 2007. The transmission choice (or choices), whether manual or automatic, is unknown at this time. The Aurion will be available only in Australia, although the supercharger might make it to the US. Going on sale in early May, it will have a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $54,900 and will include a wide array of premium standard features typically offered as options on the GS300 and GS430 models. A similar packaging strategy was employed for the RX400h hybrid SUV. If the RX400h is any indication, expect waiting lists and no discounts for the GS450h.

Utilizing a 3.5 liter V6, the GS450h is coupled with an electronic continuously variable transmission (ECVT), the only type of transmission available on Toyota and Lexus hybrids. The combined horsepower output of the gasoline and hybrid motors is 339 hp, which leaves little guesswork on the exact engine and hybrid powertrain. The 3.5 liter six cylinder unit in the upcoming ES350 has 272 hp, and the Prius' electric motor produces 67 hp. Add the two together and you get exactly 339 hp. So the hybrid system and battery on the Prius is exactly the same as the one on the GS450h. That's a disappointment, since a larger chassis could have fitted at least a larger hybrid battery, which would yield better mileage and power.

Numbers from the factory are 0-60 MPH in 5.2 seconds and a combined highway/city mileage of 28 MPG. That compares favorably with the eight cylinder GS430, which goes 0-60 MPH in 5.7 seconds, and has a combined highway/city mileage of 21.5 MPG. The GS430 retails $2,830 less at $52,070, but has less standard equipment. The exact equipment details for the GS450h is unknown at this time.

It's also interesting to see that the 3.5 liter V6 offered on the IS350 is not being shared with any other Lexus or Toyota model. The IS350's V6 outputs at least 30 more horsepower than the standard 3.5 liter V6 being proliferated throughout the Lexus and Toyota lineup.

Lexus Announces RX350, Highlander to Follow, orig. posted 02/22/2006

Lexus recently announced the 2007 RX350 sporting a 270 hp 3.5 liter six cylinder engine. That's 2 hp more than the same engine in the 2007 Toyota Camry, which doesn't require premium gasoline, but 2 hp less than the 2007 Lexus ES350. The RX350 will be mated to a five speed automatic transmission. Acceleration numbers from the factory are 7.3 seconds 0-60 MPH for the FWD and 7.4 seconds for the AWD, about 0.5 seconds quicker than the RX330.

Besides the engine, other functional enhancements were made. To improve noise insulation inside the cabin, an acoustic windshield and sound dampening materials were added to the door, instrument, and floor panels. An upgraded sound system now comes standard with eight speakers, in-dash six-CD autochanger, Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL), Radio Data System (RDS), and a digital signal processor. An optional Mark Levinson sound system is still optional. A fifth generation navigation system is now optional that boasts higher resolution and detail than the previous version. Also, the tire pressure monitoring system is now integrated with the instrument panel.

Produced in Kyushu, Japan, and Cambridge in southern Ontario, Canada, the RX 350 will go on sale February 24, 2006. The new RX 350 FWD model will carry a base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $37,400 while the AWD model's MSRP will be $38,800, a $1,030 increase on each as compared to the 2006 models.

The RX350 leaves the Highlander (aka Harrier) the only un-announced six cylinder model in the Toyota lineup that needs to move from the now discontinued 3.3 liter engine to the 3.5 liter. The Highlander shares a stretched platform from the previous generation Lexus RX300, and it is unclear whether the 3.5 liter will appear on its current platform, or will be introduced with an all-new Highlander based on the RX350.

Industry Predictions: Caliber a Sure Shot, Tilda Headed for the Heap, Fit Healthy for Honda, orig. posted 02/17/2007

In harmony with 02/17/2006's blog "Industry Predictions: Chrysler Will Rise, Nissan Will Fall", I will also make a few model specific predictions. In the small-vehicle market, the upcoming Dodge (Chrysler) Caliber will be a mild success, the weakest link being its engine, which was co-developed with Hyundai and Mitsubishi (both not known for quality). The upcoming Nissan Tilda will be a failure even before the door is opened, with obscure exterior styling. Mixed with sub-par quality, the Nissan Quest minivan had a similar problem, where executives admitted sales disappointment and that its mid-cycle revision was one of the most expensive in the company's history. The upcoming Honda Fit will be a strong success, competing effectively with Scion's (Toyota) xA and xB.

Sales Prediction Ratings:

- Strong Success: hurry, build another plant!
- Success: in-line with expectations
- Mild Success: satisfactory (perhaps slightly lower than expectations)
- Mild Failure: lower than expectations, but not low enough to kill production
- Failure: to kill or not to kill production, that is the question
- Strong Failure: how did this get approved?!?

Industry Predictions: Chrysler will rise, Nissan will fall, orig. posted 02/17/2006

Most publication reviews do not or cannot measure complexity or refinement of an automobile (for more information, see blog "What is Quality" 02/03/2006).
Which is a shame, since the facts show that automobile manufacturers who are least complex and refined are the ones that are struggling, and the ones that have the technical edge and resources are the ones prospering.

No clearer can this be seen than with Chrysler. Originally an American company, from a country not known for complexity or refinement (typical of large countries), Chrysler struggled against Japanese imports ever since they gained traction in the early to mid 80s. US automagazines were sympathetic, and it wasn't unusual to see Chrysler products, or even GM or Ford products, to reach parity or even win comparisons with the Japanese.
But consumers didn't bite, and by the mid 90s, among the three largest American automakers, Chrysler was the first to reach crisis point, with bankruptcy looming on the horizon.

Then came the shock announcement by Mercedes-Benz in the late 90s to "merge" with Chrysler, forming what is now called DaimlerChrysler. This merging resulted in Mercedes-Benz basically removing key American executives and management with German ones.
Everything from suppliers, manufacturing, engineering, and testing were revisited, re-worked, and re-done using the German way. And the result? 3 or 4 years after the merger, Chrysler has released blockbuster sales hits that had staying power. For example, the Chrysler 300, based on an older Mercedes-Benz E-Class platform, has continued to sell strongly three years and counting.

With GM and Ford edging nearer to crisis mode, some people say "they just have to build good products", perhaps thinking of Chrysler's turn-around.
But that's easier said than done, especially against countries that specialize in complexity and refinement, like Germany or Japan. Remember, Chrysler could not do it until German automaker Mercedes-Benz took control.
Perhaps small countries with relative security have an advantage in advancing technology faster than larger countries.

Also, recent sales stagnation at Nissan in light of Toyota and Honda's strong sales might be a tipping point. Lagging behing Toyota and Honda in complexity and refinement, Nissan enjoyed for the past four years a resurgence due to new products with typically more engine power. But with Toyota and Honda unrelenting in increasing both engine efficiency and power, Nissan will find it more difficult to hold an advantage. Severely behind engine technlogies such as variable valve timing, Nissan has mainly used larger displacement engines to outmuscle Toyota and Honda. But larger displacement usually results in lower gas mileage. And there's only so much you can grow an engine before the balance tips towards fuel efficiency for the average consumer, especially in light of high gas prices.

Based on the fact that consumers have and most likely will continue to gravitate towards the more complex and refined, I predict that GM and Ford will eventually fall behind not only Toyota, but Honda and Chrysler. I also predict a dire future for Nissan. In the long term, GM, Ford, and Nissan will eventually disappear, perhaps being swallowed up by Germany's Big Three (Volkswagen, DaimlerChrysler, BMW) or Japan's Big Two (Toyota, Honda). Some tell-tale signs: Ford executives have openly talked about being competitive as one of the U.S. market's "Big Six" automakers, and Nissan leader Carlos Ghosn described US market conditions as "brutal".

Big Three Misleading On Fuel Efficiency, orig. posted 02/07/2006

With the runaway success of Toyota's Prius and the incredible publicity hybrid systems generate, it's no wonder GM, Ford, and Chrysler (traditionally the "Big Three") feel left out, perhaps even perceived as environmentally unfriendly.
To combat this perception and to address increasingly fuel-mileage aware consumers, they actively campaign their greener side. GM has its ethanol-based products, Ford showcases its Escape Hybrid, and Chrysler has its cylinder deactivation technology. So it might seem on the surface that the Big Three's enviro-friendly initiatives are similar to Toyota's and Honda's.

This couldn't be further from the truth. Consider the stark reality of fuel efficiency today. According to the US government, eight of the top 10 most fuel efficient vehicles for 2006 are made by Toyota, Honda, or Volkswagen. The Ford Escape Hybrid, two-wheel and four-wheel, round out the list.
But Ford's hybrid system is licensed from Toyota. Now consider the arguably more accurate Consumer Reports 2006 list of most fuel efficient vehicles:

- Ford Escape Hybrid (hybrid system from Toyota)
- Lexus RX400h (Toyota)
- Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited
- Toyota Tacoma V6
- Toyota Prius
- Toyota Sienna XLE
- Scion xB (Toyota)
- Pontiac Vibe FWD (Toyota powertrain)
- Honda CR-V EX
- Honda Odyssey EX
- Subaru Forester 2.5X
- Subaru Baja 4 cylinder
- Nissan Murano SL
- Chevrolet Colorado LS 5 cylinder
- Mazda MPV LX

Digging a little deeper, the numbers skew further. Not only did Ford and GM make only three placements out of the 15 vehicles mentioned, but one has its hybrid system licensed from Toyota, and the other is primarily made by Toyota, including the engine and transmission (Pontiac Vibe). That means only one out of the 15 can solely be attributed to GM.

And Consumer Reports' Worst Mileage list? Parentheses added to show parent company:

- Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT LT V6 (GM)
- Hummer H3 (GM)
- Chevrolet Suburban LT (GM)
- Chevrolet Avalanche 5.3 (GM)
- Land Rover LR3 SE V8 (Ford)
- Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer
- Volvo XC70 (Ford)
- Mazda 6 V6 (Ford powertrain)
- Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 6 cylinder (Chrysler)
- Jeep Liberty Sport V6 (Chrysler)
- Dodge Magnum SXT V6 (Chrysler)
- Dodge Durango Limited 5.7 (Chrysler)
- Dodge Ram 5.7 SLT (Chrysler)
- Dodge Ram 4.7 SLT (Chrysler)
- Kia Sorento EX

Not surprisingly, the sole Japanese company on this list, the Mazda 6, has its engine from Ford. Therefore, out of the 15 vehicles mentioned, 14 can be accredited to GM, Ford, or Chrysler. Zero to Toyota or Honda.

QUICK THOUGHT: Will Lexus separate from Toyota?, orig. posted 02/06/2006

In the upcoming 2006 Chicago Auto Show, Lexus will introduce the all-new Lexus ES350. But which 3.5 liter 6 cylinder engine will it get?

This is where things can get interesting. It's possible the ES will be outfitted with the less powerful bread-and-butter 3.5 liter being profilerated throughout the Toyota lineup. However, if the ES is outfitted with the more powerful 3.5 liter found in the IS350, it can finally be differentiated from the Camry on the powertrain level. It might also signal a broader strategy to move Lexus models to a higher and exclusive engine lineup. Currently, many Lexus models that share similar chassis also share similar powertrains, like the Lexus ES330 and Toyota Camry, or Lexus LX470 and Toyota Landcruiser.

UPDATE 02/11/2006: The 2007 Lexus ES350 will use the same engine and transmission found in the six cylinder Toyota Camry. However, due to the higher octane optimization, the same engine in the ES350 will make 272 hp compared with the Camry's 268 hp.
